Samsung filed the patent with the US Patent & Trademark Office. Mechanism includes smartphone recognizing the seat ring and displaying a menu as well as icons which the ring could control. Qualcomm Signs New Patent Licensing Deals In China

Qualcomm  announced today that it has inked new patent licensing deals in China with smartphone manufacturers Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment and Haier Group. The San Diego-based chipmaker has made a series of similar agreements over the past two months as it recovers from an antitrust investigation by the Chinese government. Since the beginning of November, Qualcomm has also announced deals with  QiKu , a joint venture between Qihoo 360 and Coolpad,  Xiaomi , Huawei, TCL Communication Technology Holdings, and ZTE. Financial terms for its latest deals were undisclosed, but Qualcomm stated that its licensing agreements with Tianyu and Haier adhere to the terms of a rectification plan it submitted to China’s National Reform and Development Commission earlier this year after the government found that it had violated national antimonopoly laws. Qualcomm said at the time that it disagreed with the results of the investigation, but agreed to pay a $975 million penalty. The fin

Report: Samsung and LG to supply AMOLED panels for new iPhones

AMOLED, OLED, EL, SAMOLED, YOUM, POLED: whatever abbreviation one chooses to give organic display technology, they all describe the same basic results: deep inky blacks, vibrant colors, and near infinite contrast. Samsung has made a name for its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series in part, because of the Super AMOLED panels the devices make use of. Even LG has gotten into the game with its G Flex series, and smartwatches. Now however, it seems that  both  companies are going to be working hard to put out panels for…Apple. According to a new report published today by Korean site etNews, the contracts have been finalized and are simply awaiting signatures to officiate. The possibly pending production won’t come cheap however, and will apparently require Samsung and LG to invest a total of $12.8 billion over the next 2 or 3 years, some of which Apple itself may help finance. Free Basics Vs Net Neutrality: Mark Zuckerberg Fuels Debate in India

Facebook rechristened its free internet platform internet.org, which it developed in conjunction with Reliance Communications Network as Free Basics in September. NEW DELHI:   First splashy full page ads in major Indian newspapers and now a personal piece by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a leading English daily defending Free Basics, the war over "free" or "selective" internet services for the poor and net neutrality has entered a new phase. "Free Basics should stay to help achieve digital equality for India. Free Basics is a bridge to the full internet and digital equality... There's no valid basis for denying people the choice to use Free Basics, and that's what thousands of people across India have chosen to tell the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) over the last few weeks," Mr Zuckerberg wrote in a leading English daily, defending his ambitious initiative to provide a pre-selected suite of internet services to those who c

How to Use Your Phone to Detect Hidden Surveillance Cameras at Home

If you have reason to be suspicious of a partner or employer, or they have reason (good or bad) to be suspicious of you, and you fear they might be filming you with a  hidden surveillance camera , what can you do about it, other than use some futuristic, James Bond-style camera detection device? Well, you could use a modern day,  smartphone -style camera detection device. You Are Being Watched Someone is watching you. This is pretty much irrefutable in the post-Snowden era. But digital surveillance of emails and telephone records is a little less hair-raising than someone actually observing your movements via a hidden surveillance camera. It’s unlikely that you have never been filmed out in public, either on CCTV or in the distance on a TV news report, and as a society we’ve become more accepting of closed circuit cameras, security cameras, and so on (rightly or wrongly). But what about closer to home? What about in the office, development room, bathrooms and dressing

Samsung Pay Will Launch Online Payments In the U.S.

Samsung Pay plans a major expansion in the United States next year. Users will be able to make purchases on websites with Samsung Pay, which puts it into more direct competition with services like Paypal,  Reuters reports . The mobile wallet platform will be also available on lower-end Samsung smartphones, not just flagship models like the Galaxy S6 Edge. In an interview with Reuters, Samsung global co-general manager Thomas Ko said Samsung Pay will roll out to more smartphone models next year. The payment platform launched in the U.S. in September and has an advantage over competitors because it can emulate magnetic stripe cards thanks to Samsung’s acquisition of LoopPay, in addition to using NFC technology like Apple Pay and Android Pay. This means Samsung Pay  works with a wider assortment of existing point-of-sale equipment  than Apple Pay or Android Pay does. Ko claims that Samsung Pay is already the most widely accepted mobile payments system in the U.S. because it is

Google And Ford Will Reportedly Team Up To Build Self-Driving Cars

Google  and  Ford  are planning to develop and build self-driving vehicles together in a joint venture and will announce the deal at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, says a report in Yahoo Autos. The partnership would represent a major collaboration between two of the biggest names in the tech and automotive industries. According to Yahoo Autos’ sources, the deal is not exclusive, which means Google would be free to work with other automakers who are interested in its self-driving car technology. Being the first company to strike a deal with Google, however, may give Ford an edge over rivals, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, and Tesla, that are also working on self-driving cars and eager to get them to market. During the last CES in January 2014, Ford chief executive offier Mark Fields said that he believes somebody will introduce autonomous vehicles within the next five years. The report says the joint venture would legally be considered separate fro

SpaceX Successfully Lands A Giant Falcon 9 Rocket For The First Time

SpaceX has done it. Elon Musk’s rocket startup just successfully launched and then landed a Falcon 9 rocket some ten minutes later. This comes after several attempts that ended in fiery explosions. The rocket was carrying 11 satellites destined for low-Earth orbit. It’s important to note, this rocket isn’t a one-off affair, or a small rocket like the Blue Origin New Shepard or SpaceX Grasshopper. This Falcon 9 carried important cargo and landing the rocket booster was the secondary goal of the mission. The 15-story Falcon 9 is a serious rocket, capable of reaching 124 miles up thanks to the 1.5 million pounds of thrust produced by its 9 engines. It’s designed to take serious payloads into serious orbit. The Blue Origin is capable of taking a few humans 62 miles into the sky — which is still great. SpaceX previously attempted to land a Falcon 9 on a robotic barge. This time around, the company opted for terra firma and a massive concrete landing pad. Landing a Falcon
